Renaming CentOS 7 images to CENTOS7X-... or similar
From my conversations with @dreading, I understand that with respect to security-relevant updates, CentOS does not make "upgrade distinctions" between their point releases. Rather, as they release security patches, CentOS 7.n simply becomes CentOS 7.n+1.
This makes it more difficult for us to maintain disk images that are exactly CentOS 7.1, 7.2, etc., and which have names like CENOTS71-blah
.
How can we best make our upgrading situation/policy visible to users?
One idea is to refer to our CentOS images as CENTOS7X-
—the idea being that X is allowed to change over time. And by putting the X in the name, we advertise the fact that "yes, we know that X will change."
An alternative is to switch to CENTOS7-
, leaving the point release implicit. But maybe this will lead to more questions from users than the alternative?
Another issue: If we allow the point release to float, should we also incorporate non-security updates?
