Setup storage server for Cloudlab
We need a real storage (blockstore) server for CloudLab Utah. Currently I have a "test" server running in a VM on a virtual disk.
The plan is to repurpose the second storage server from Apt (that was never setup, it has been the "wifi" node, aka adminws
, since day 1) using half the storage from the disk array (50TB?). The machine itself cannot move from the Apt rack as it has short cables to the disk array. So we need to run wires around from the Apt side of the pod to the Cloudlab side. Even though they are only about 6 feet apart, we have to route the cables around the outside, a distance of more like 30 feet.
Control network is no problem, we can run a cat5 around to the 1Gb procurve switch that was setup recently.
Experimental interconnects are more of a problem. We have 2 x 10Gb on the node and 40Gb only on the bighp1
. We could use a breakout, but the distance is too far for passive cabling. We do have a couple of 2 x 40Gb Mellanox interfaces that we pulled out of the HP control nodes. If we stick one of those in the machine, we could run a single 15m active QSFP+ cable. This depends on whether FreeNAS supports the 40Gb interface however.
But before any of that, we need to move the squatters from adminws
. This is primarily us and the UMass power monitoring.
