the 'one-true-awk' version of awk, botches the calculations when the
values get close to MAXINT.  Instead, just create a hex string since
sysctl knows about hex numbers.

"hash" has been renamed as "key."  V2 also eliminates the 666 length check.

Needed for the frisbee environment, so might as well use it everywhere.
